PECO Cross Country League (2017-18): Race 1 (Nostell Priory)

Race Date: Sunday 26th November 2017

Race Times & Distances:
Junior XC Challenge (School Year 2 - 6): 10.00am, 1 mile approx.
Junior XC Challenge (School Year 7 - 12): 10.20am, 2 miles approx.
Seniors (16 and over*): Men 11.00am; Women 11.10am (4.9 miles approx.)

Race Location: The National Trust has kindly allowed us to stage the event on the parkland around Nostell Priory on the A638 Wakefield-Doncaster Road (WF4 1QE) http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/nostell-priory/
For sat nav users the village is “Wragby”. There are ample brown tourist signposts to the Priory.

Registration: It’s a 5 minute walk along the footpath to registration which is in the Function Room across the courtyard within the Stable Block. No muddy shoes and clothing please in the Function Room. There is a National Trust Café within the courtyard which serves hot and cold beverages and food – this is open from 10:00am. The toilets within the Stable Block must not be used for changing.

Car Parking: Please note that the grounds will still be open to the public – please follow the instructions of the National Trust staff and marshals to the parking areas. There is a parking charge of £2 per car (usual cost £4) but free to National Trust Members who must bring their current membership card to obtain a parking ticket. Please bring change and car share wherever possible.

The Course: The course is mainly on grass with short sections of stone/grass track and woodland paths with bark chippings. It does cross a surfaced cycle track and therefore spikes cannot be worn. There are no sharp inclines but it’s not entirely flat! Farm gates will be open; there are no stiles.
An area for Club flags and tents has been earmarked in front of the house beyond the lawned area which should be kept clear.

Senior Course: 4.9m approximately largely on parkland.

The Start is in the centre of the main vista in front of the House and runs downhill before curving to the right and returning uphill before curving around again and following the left hand side down towards a wide gateway (will be open). Sharp turn to the right (Engine Lane – a ‘green lane’) then left running past Chestnut Wood on the right. At the top turn left and then left again along a track with woodland on the right. At the bottom, turn right along Engine Lane (track) before turning left through wide gateway following track through field. Sharp right by gate to follow perimeter of ‘Obelisk Park’ (route dependent upon ground conditions) in an anti-clockwise direction. Exit onto track by Lower Lake into small wood, emerging on to track. Turn left before bridge along cycle track then sharp right to enter woodland. There will probably be a short area where lead runners and back-markers will pass (both to keep right). The area will be taped. After emerging from the wood, curve round to the left to run down the edge of the vista before curving round to the right and finishing near the top of the vista.
The course may have to be amended should ground conditions become very wet.
The course passes through a number of farm gates which will be open and should not create bottlenecks.

Junior Course: 2m

Start is the same as the Senior course. Partly follows the Senior course but cuts across the Obelisk Park field. Finish is after exiting the woodland.
In the event of adverse ground conditions the route will be amended to follow the perimeter of the rectangular field to the East as used by the Senior course instead of the Obelisk Park

Junior Course: 1m

This has a separate start, close to the main start and runs downhill from the House, turning left to exit through the gateway to Engine Lane. Turn left to follow track before turning left through gateway onto farm track. Gate into small wood. Exit to finish (same as Junior 2m).

After The Race: Soup and rolls will be available at Nostell St Oswald Cricket Club, Garmil Lane, Nostell WF4 1QU which is directly opposite the entrance to the Priory – approximately 500 metres walk from the carpark/finish areas. PLEASE LEAVE YOUR CAR IN THE PRIORY CAR PARK AS THERE WILL NOT BE ANY SPACES AT THE CRICKET GROUND. There is a licensed bar.
Last season’s Club and Senior Individual trophies will be presented at approximately 12.30pm.
